UMNO perlukan Perkasa untuk raih sokongan Melayu

KUALA LUMPUR 12 Sept.

– Bernama

Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Malaysia or Perkasa is a non-governmental Malay Supremacy organization that was formed by Ibrahim Ali in the aftermath of the Malaysian general elections in 2008. The group claims to have a membership of 300,000, though outsiders estimate the actual figure to be much lower. The major objectives for establishing Perkasa, according to Ibrahim Ali, are the "protectors of Article 153 of the Constitution of Malaysia" and to defend the rights of Bumiputera from being eroded by certain quarters. Perkasa is said to be fighting and defending the rights of the Malays which they feel are being challenged by non-Malays inMalaysia.
It has been branded a fascist organisation.

Leadership

Member of Parliament Datuk Ibrahim Ali is the founder and first president of Perkasa. The other leader of Perkasa is its Deputy President Dato Fuad Hassan.

Controversy

On 1 July 2010, the official organ of Perkasa, Suara Perkasa had published an article on its front page asking Dr. Wee Ka Siong to be detained under Internal Security Act (ISA) for questioning the special position of Bumiputera which is under the Article 153 of the Constitution of Malaysia. However, Wee had dismissed such allegation made by Perkasa. Suara Perkasa was asked to explain this controversial publication by the Malaysian Home Ministry on the following day. This article had received backlash by the component parties in Barisan Nasional, including United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) andMalaysian Indian Congress (MIC). On 5 July 2010, the controversial Suara Perkasa was let off by Home Ministry with a warning for publishing an article that could have jeopardised national unity.

Criticism

On July 9, 2010, the group was labeled 'militant' by former US Ambassador to Malaysia John Malott.
The group has been criticised by former opposition leader Lim Kit Siang for re-using the religion, race and nationalism card when it's been "proven obsolete and irrelevant in bringing progress and change to Malay social and economic development".
State Gerakan official and lawyer Baljit Singh has condemned Perkasa as the Malaysian version of the white American supremacist movement Ku Klux Klan, which openly advocates racism, religious extremism and fascism. He added that Perkasa incites racial hatred and social disharmony by threatening to wage a holy war against Christians and other ethnic and religious minorities in Malaysia.

A Nightmare for BN & DAP?

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Barisan Nasional today condemned Perkasa for conducting funeral rites for Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng outside his residence last Thursday.

State BN chief Teng Chang Yeow said it was “a foolish act or a stupid act”.

“We condemn Perkasa, we condemn it,” he told newsmen after a BN meeting here today.

He said it was not possible for BN to control the Malay rights group’s actions because it was not under the coalition’s influence.

“They are not even friends of Barisan. How to cap them? You tell me,” Teng said at a press conference.
He brushed aside a remark that the public perception was “Perkasa is Umno, Umno is Perkasa”.

“You can ask the Umno state chairman here,” he said, pointing to Zainal Abidin Osman, who was standing next to him.

Zainal Abidin claimed that his party had “no control or hold over Perkasa and its actions”.

“Perkasa is a NGO and Umno is a political party,” he said. “We can’t control them. They won’t listen to us.”
He denounced the Perkasa demonstration at Lim’s house.

During the 10-minute demonstration, about 30 people led by Penang Perkasa chief Mohd Ridzuan Azudin placed a garland over a portrait of Lim and pasted posters with swastika signs on his gate.

They held another noisy gathering, performing similar rituals, at Komtar about 30 minutes later.

They alleged that Lim had incited racial tension between Malays and Indians, in reference to the Chief Minister’s remark last week that he felt “all Hindu temples are in danger if Umno returns to power”.
